Changing how you eat is hard!  After years and years of eating crappy and being overweight I finally decided to take the bull by the horns.  I was facing diabetes, joint pain and breathing issues.  Not to mention just feeling blah overall.

This not my first rodeo with trying to drop off excessive pounds. In fact this is time number 2,923,921,420,323.  And I failed each and every time.  Why? Because I was eating a bunch of food I didn’t want to eat.  I was eating salads upon salads upon salads.  Oatmeal, Oatmeal and more oatmeal. Chicken, fish, chicken, fish, chicken, fish. It was so boring!

This time I decided I wasn’t going to do that again.  I was going to make food choices which I would live with for the rest of my life.  Like I said to start changing how you eat is hard. With that in mind, I am not going to change how for a short while and revert back.  It just didn’t not make sense to me anymore.

No seriously. Look at it like this, you make the transition into eating good healthy food.  I am not talking about rabbit food. i am talking about fruits, veggies, lean protein, high fiber and whole foods. Reworking your diet to strip out unnecessary fat and sugars. You stop going to fast food restaurants completely and pretty much stopped eating out except the rare occasion. You still have the occasional doughnut but it is one not four.  Not to mention all the extra exercise.  The pounds are falling off and you are feeling great!

So please explain to me why when the scales displays that magic number,  quite a few people return back to their old habits?  Only to repeat the process again and again, year after year.

Come closer.  Come on closer! Now listen! Cut that nonsense out!

I am not saying you can’t have burger.  I am not saying you can’t have  nachos. But you can not have a burger with a side of nachos and wash it down with a 64oz Coke and a strawberry shake with a piece of strawberry pie inside of the shake for a snack!

Let me let you in on a secret!  A secret I want to desperately out in the world. You can have burgers, nachos and other comfort food favorites if you do it SMARTLY!!

What is smartly?  Low fat and not fat dairy, lean meats (4oz of ground turkey, extra lean pork and 97% lean beef all have about 150 calories), limit refined sugar and flours (white sugar and flour), lower your salt intake and change out the deep frier for the oven are a few ways to start.

Say this with me: “There is NO such thing as junk food! There is no such thing as health/diet food” Keep saying it until it sinks in deep!

If love Snickers, so much you would marry a bar if you could figure it out, then work a snickers into your eating plan. Not 3 snickers. One snickers. Moderation is the key to everything.

I won’t lie. The “cleaner” you eat the better you feel physically. Mentally and emotionally are where most people struggle. You have to get your mind right as well. To this start a food diary.  When you reach for the tub of ice cream and a spoon, take a minute to think about how you are feeling. Find something else which will give you the same release. This takes practice!

This new lifestyle is not about taking the joy out of eating. It is about finding the balance between your health and enjoyment. Once you learn the basic tweaks and tricks to cooking and eating healthier, you won’t feel you have to make the choice between to the two.

This is your life! Put a little planning and research into feeding  your soul and fueling your body. Get a subscription to Cooking Light  and/or Eating Well Magazines. Buy a cookbook like America’s Test Kitchen Comfort Food Makeovers.

Start reading labels.I am not talking only the nutritional information but ingredients. Look for added oils and sugar in the products do not need it. Look for stuff you can not pronounce or think you need gloves to handle.

Learn how to cook. I am sorry there is no way around it.  Processed food is full of extra fat, sugar and/or salt. There are some good products out there but you need to read the labels real close.

Your family will hardly notice. That is not true they will notice how much happier you are now everyone is eating the same thing. They will also notice how much better they feel. What they will hardly notice is difference been a cheeseburger made light and a normal one. Yes I said cheeseburger.  And Mac-N-Cheese. And dare I say Buffalo Wings. They will hardly notice this lifestyle change.

Make those changes now and you will see they are not only better for you but delicious. You won’t need cheat days because you eat good all the time and those foods fit into your healthy lifestyle.  This way if you find yourself at In-N-Out you can enjoy yourself without stressing about points or calories for the day.  Why?  Because 90% of the time you eat well.

Yes there are so many different eating styles out there.  Between vegan, raw, eating clean, gluten free and dairy free one can get confused.  Yes these are all considering healthy eating styles.  Yet they are not the only healthy eating styles out there.

Trust me, you can have your cake and eat it too if you eat smart.
